1) Can you tell me a little about the history of Pretas Cervejeiras? What are the collective values?

The Pretas Cervejeiras project is born from the union of black women, with different experiences, united by the love of beer. Recently, we underwent a restructuring process, making the group comprised of five people responsible for moderating and producing content, some collaborating, working behind the scenes, editing our materials and making everything work in addition to, of course, our community of more than six thousand followers, who actively contribute to the construction of our content.

 

The project aims to encourage the discussion of topics that are valuable to black women and society as a whole, such as racism, machismo and diversity, using beer as a common thread. We aim to promote microrevolutions and give visibility to the stories and experiences of plural Black women, creating a connection between Black people and beer culture.

 

2) What does it mean to be a preta cervejeira for you?

We asked ourselves this question some time ago and it was quite interesting to note that for each of the members being a preta cervejeira meant something different. We then decided to take this question to our community, to those women who follow us and also declare themselves pretas cervejeiras and the answers that came up the most were: Freedom, resistance, power and continuity. Different things, but they align in many ways with what we believe. To be a preta cervejeira, today, is to be plural, fun and have the desire to share knowledge and affection.

 

3) Can you describe the insertion of Black people in the craft beer market in Rio (for example, Black breweries, Black spaces with craft beer, homebrewers and professional breweries)?

The beer industry as a whole is still quite elitist, white and masculine. Initiatives like ours seek to modify this scenario, giving visibility and opening paths for black women who, with access to beer knowledge, begin to be part of the beer scene as more qualified consumers or even deepening knowledge and becoming professionals in the beer market.

 

4) What are some activities that you and/or the collective develop in relation to craft beer? Do you participate in regional, national or international events?

Our actions, currently, due to the pandemic, are centered on the production of digital content. We believe that the construction of new narratives and the naturalization of the presence of Black people in several areas, including the brewery, is fundamental.

 

Under normal conditions, we organize our face-to-face meetings, tasting workshops, conversation circles and “rolezinhos” – as we call our trips together with our followers to large beer events. These meetings are always full of smiles and affections, mainly because we prioritize safe spaces, with no history of harassment and managed by women so that everyone can feel comfortable.

 

 

5) From the perspective of your experience in this movement of Black people in the industry in Brazil, what are some tips you have for other Black communities in the Diaspora wanting to mobilize in this industry?

We believe so much in the power of the collective. In this process of aquilombamento. The main advice we can give is to seek other people or a group of people who are already inside to find ways. We are mobilizing through partnerships with companies to facilitate other people’s access to the beer market.

 

6) What are your favorite beers?

The group is large, right? Each with a different relationship with beer and at a different time in relation to knowledge about beer. This plurality is what we find most incredible. It is important to note that we are not here wanting to influence tastes or preferences, but to bring information so that each one can make their choice more consciously.

 

But let’s go to our preferences.

 

Madu: I am currently very interested in beers produced with wild microorganisms. Acidified or aged in wooden barrels.

Jaciana: Lagers, in general. I prefer beers that are easier to drink, less bitter.

Juliana: I prefer more bitter beers, like India Pale Ale (Ipa).

Thayná: More fruity beers.

Teka: Russian Imperial Stout (RIS), at the moment.

1) Pode me contar um pouco sobre a história das Pretas Cervejeiras? Quais são os valores do coletivo? 

O projeto Pretas Cervejeiras, nasce da união mulheres negras, com vivências distintas, unidas pelo amor à cerveja. Recentemente, passamos por um processo de reestruturação, fazendo com que o grupo seja formado por cinco pessoas responsáveis pela moderação e produção de conteúdo, algumas colaboradas, que atuam por trás das câmeras, editando nossos materiais e fazendo tudo funcionar além de é claro, nossa comunidade de mais de seis mil seguidoras, que contribuem ativamente para a construção do nosso conteúdo.

 

O projeto tem como objetivo, fomentar a discussão de temas valiosos às mulheres negras e a sociedade como um todo, como racismo, machismo e diversidade, utilizando a cerveja como fio condutor. Objetivamos promover micro revoluções e dar visibilidade às histórias e vivências de mulheres negras plurais. Criando conexão entre pessoas negras e a cultura cervejeira.

 

2) O que significa ser uma cervejeira preta pra você?

A gente se fez essa pergunta algum tempo atrás e foi bastante interessante observar que para cada uma das integrantes ser Preta Cervejeira significava algo diferente. Decidimos então levar essa pergunta à nossa comunidade, àquelas mulheres que nos seguem e também se declaram Pretas Cervejeiras e as respostas que mais apareceram foram: Liberdade, resistência, potência e continuidade. Coisas diferentes, mas que se alinham de muitas formas ao que acreditamos. Ser Preta Cervejeira, hoje, é ser plural, divertida e ter como desejo compartilhar conhecimento e afeto.

 

3) Pode descrever a inserção de pessoas pretas no mercado de cerveja artesanal no Rio? (por exemplo, cervejarias pretas, espaços pretos com cerveja artesanal, produtores caseiros e profissionais)

O meio cervejeiro como um todo, ainda é bastante elitista, branco e masculino. Iniciativas como a nossa, buscam modificar esse cenário, dando visibilidade e abrindo caminhos para mulheres negras que, com acesso ao conhecimento cervejeiro, começam a fazer parte do cenário cervejeiro como consumidoras mais qualificadas ou até mesmo aprofundando conhecimento e se tornando profionais no mercado cervejeiro.

 

4) Quais são algumas atividades que você e/ou o coletivo desenvolvem em relação a cerveja artesanal? Vocês participam de eventos regionais, nacionais ou internacionais? 

Nossas ações, atualmente, em função da pandemia, estão centradas na produção de conteúdo digital. Acreditamos que a construção de novas narrativas e a naturalização da presença de pessoas negras em diversas áreas, incluindo a cervejeira, é fundamental.

 

Em condições normais, produzimos nossos encontros presenciais, oficinais de degustações, rodas de conversas e “rolezinhos” – como chamamos a nossa ida junto com as seguidoras a eventos cervejeiros de grande porte. Esses encontros são sempre repletos de sorrisos e afetos, principalmente por priorizarmos espaços seguros, sem histórico de assédio e gerenciados por mulheres para que todas possam se sentir confortáveis.

 

 

5) Da perspectiva da sua experiência nesse movimento de pessoas pretas na indústria no Brasil, quais são alguns conselhos que você tem para outras comunidades pretas na diáspora querendo se mobilizar nessa indústria?

Nós acreditamos demais na potência do coletivo. Nesse processo de aquilombamento. O principal conselho que podemos dar é buscar outras pessoas ou grupo de pessoas que já estão dentro para buscar caminhos. Nós estamos nos mobilizando através de parcerias com empresas para facilitar o acesso de outras pessoas ao mercado cervejeiro.

 

6) Quais são suas cervejas preferidas?

O grupo é grande, né? Cada uma com uma relação diferente com cerveja e em um momento diferente em relação ao conhecimento sobre cerveja. Essa pluralidade é o que achamos mais incrível. Importante ressaltar que não estamos aqui querendo influenciar gostos ou preferencias e sim, levar informações para que cada uma possa fazer a sua escolha de forma mais consciente.

Mais vamos as nossas preferencias.

 

Madu: Atualmente estou muito interessada em cervejas produzidas com microorganismos selvagens. Acidificadas ou envelhecidas em barril de madeira.

Jaciana: Lagers, em geral. Prefere cervejas mais fáceis de beber, menos amargas.

Juliana: Prefere cervejas mais amargas, como as Indias Pale Ale (Ipa).

Thayná: Cervejas mais frutadas.

Teka: Russian Imperial Stout (RIS), no momento.
