Language is an essential part of how we communicate with each other, and it can have a powerful impact on how we perceive and understand the world around us. For transgender individuals, language can be especially important in validating their identities and experiences. In this blog post, we’ll explore the importance of transgender-inclusive language and provide some examples of how to use it in everyday conversation.

What is transgender-inclusive language?

Transgender-inclusive language refers to words and phrases that acknowledge and respect the diversity of gender identities and expressions. It involves using language that is inclusive of all individuals, regardless of their gender identity. This means avoiding gendered language that assumes someone’s gender and using gender-neutral language instead.

Why is transgender-inclusive language important?

Transgender-inclusive language is important for a number of reasons. First, it helps to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for transgender individuals. When we use language that is respectful of people’s gender identities, we send the message that we accept and support them for who they are.

Second, transgender-inclusive language can help to reduce stigma and discrimination. When we use language that is gender-neutral or inclusive of all genders, we reduce the likelihood of making assumptions about someone’s gender identity. This can help to reduce feelings of discomfort or anxiety for transgender individuals who may be afraid of being misgendered or discriminated against.

Third, using transgender-inclusive language is a way of showing respect for people’s gender identities. By using someone’s preferred pronouns and avoiding gendered language, we show that we value and respect their identity and that we are willing to learn and grow as allies.

Examples of transgender-inclusive language

There are many ways to use transgender-inclusive language in everyday conversation. Here are some examples:

  1. Use gender-neutral pronouns: Instead of assuming someone’s gender based on their appearance, use gender-neutral pronouns like “they,” “them,” and “their.” For example, instead of saying “he” or “she,” say “they.” This is a way of acknowledging that not everyone identifies as male or female and that there are many gender identities that fall outside of the traditional binary.
  2. Ask for someone’s pronouns: When meeting someone for the first time, it’s a good idea to ask what pronouns they use. This shows that you are open-minded and respectful of their gender identity, and it can help to avoid making assumptions based on someone’s appearance.
  3. Avoid gendered language: Many words in the English language are gendered, such as “man,” “woman,” “he,” and “she.” Try to avoid using gendered language whenever possible, and use gender-neutral language instead. For example, instead of saying “ladies and gentlemen,” say “folks” or “everyone.”
  4. Use gender-inclusive terms: Instead of using gendered terms like “father” or “mother,” use gender-inclusive terms like “parent” or “guardian.” This is a way of acknowledging that not all parents or caregivers identify as male or female.
  5. Use gender-affirming language: When referring to someone who is transgender, use language that affirms their gender identity. For example, if someone identifies as a woman, refer to them as “she” and use their chosen name. This is a way of showing respect for their gender identity, and it can help to reduce feelings of dysphoria.

How does it relate to beer?

Beer culture has traditionally been associated with masculinity, and many breweries have used gendered marketing and language to promote their products. However, as society becomes more aware of the diversity of gender identities and expressions, many beer enthusiasts are advocating for a more inclusive and welcoming beer culture for all identities and bodies.

One way that beer enthusiasts can support transgender individuals is by using transgender-inclusive language in beer marketing and communication. This includes avoiding gendered language that assumes someone’s gender and using gender-neutral language instead. For example, instead of using the term “manly” to describe a beer, use descriptive language that focuses on the beer’s flavor and aroma, such as “bold” or “rich.”

Additionally, beer enthusiasts can work to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for transgender individuals by supporting breweries that prioritize diversity and inclusivity. This includes breweries that are owned or operated by transgender individuals, as well as breweries that prioritize creating a safe and welcoming space for all customers.

By using transgender-inclusive language and supporting breweries that prioritize diversity and inclusivity, beer enthusiasts can help to create a more inclusive and welcoming beer culture for everyone, regardless of their gender identity. This can help to reduce feelings of isolation and marginalization for transgender individuals and create a more supportive and accepting beer community.

Conclusion

Transgender-inclusive language is an important part of creating a more inclusive and welcoming environment for transgender individuals. By using gender-neutral language, avoiding gendered assumptions, and affirming people’s gender identities, we can show our support for the transgender community and help to reduce stigma and discrimination. By making a conscious effort to use transgender-inclusive language, we can create a more inclusive and accepting world for everyone, regardless of their gender identity.

It’s important to note that language is constantly evolving, and what may be considered inclusive and respectful today may change in the future. As such, it’s important to be open to feedback and willing to learn from the transgender community about how to be more inclusive in our language.

In addition to using transgender-inclusive language, there are other ways to support the transgender community. One important way is to advocate for transgender rights and equality. This can include supporting organizations that work to promote transgender rights, speaking out against discrimination and harassment, and educating others about the experiences of transgender individuals.

It’s also important to recognize that not all transgender individuals have the same experiences or needs. Some may prefer different pronouns or language, while others may not identify as male or female at all. By being open-minded and respectful of each individual’s unique identity, we can create a more inclusive and supportive community for everyone.

In conclusion, transgender-inclusive language is an important tool for creating a more inclusive and welcoming world for transgender individuals. By using gender-neutral language, avoiding gendered assumptions, and affirming people’s gender identities, we can show our support for the transgender community and help to reduce stigma and discrimination.

By continuing to learn and grow as allies, we can work together to create a world where everyone feels valued and respected for who they are.

@EATER came out a few months ago to film the story behind Back Home Beer. They beautifully captured exactly what I’m trying to do - change the narrative that exists between Alcohol & The Middle East.
I’m asking you to please watch the documentary on YouTube (link in bio).
I think it will put into perspective why I’m so passionate about opening my own little piece of Iran right here in Brooklyn. And if you want to help me do that, you can also click on the @KICKSTARTER to check out some of the amazing rewards I have available!
More to come about the eater piece in the coming days. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life, and I got to work with such a thoughtful and compassionate group of folks. I am forever grateful for the platform.
