Are you seeking financial assistance for life-saving reproductive care in a state with prohibitive or unavailable abortion access?
The U.S. Supreme Court has decimated the federal protections for abortion and is now leaving millions without care. The BIFE Emergency Health Fund is open to folx in the beer industry and greater alcohol industries seeking abortion care in states with hostile legislation affecting reproductive rights.
The Emergency Fund will help with transportation to a nearby sanctuary state (e.g., travel gift cards, transportation vouchers). Additionally, in acknowledgment of the fact that the attack on bodily autonomy has widespread effects, the Fund will also provide assistance with mental health services that may provide vital support during this fraught time.
The criminalization of abortion has always carried greater penalties for marginalized people. With some states passing aggressive anti-abortion legislation that includes surveillance of pregnancy and criminalization of end-of-pregnancy outcomes, this assault on reproductive health will disproportionately impact people of color and low-income workers, making this a human rights issue. We fight for the fundamental human rights of all people who are unable to pay for emergency contraception or safe and legal abortion.
The Fund will provide assistance in the form of gift cards, vouchers, and other subsidized payments. For example, we will provide a rideshare gift card or airline gift card to be used to travel to a bordering state, which has laws protecting abortion.
In addition, we will provide up to two mental health counseling sessions as needed. Because abortion restrictions systemically exclude low-income people and pregnant people of color from proper channels and then punishes them for taking control of their pregnancy outcomes, not having access to safe and affordable abortion care unduly persecutes marginalized people for exercising bodily autonomy. Heightened scrutiny of such abortions means violations of doctor-patient confidentiality, arrests, incarcerations, and deportations that will disproportionately affect pregnant people from marginalized backgrounds. Mental health resources can be vital when facing the undue burdens placed on people who must travel hours, sometimes crossing state lines, just to access health care as a result of forced birth legislation.
As this is a limited fund, we are providing partial to full assistance on a case-to-case basis. Each case will be reviewed individually.
